Homeless again & Mental Dissorder

The Devipeeth India Foundation Home Again Project provides an alternative to long-term institutionalization for those who are unable to go back to their families or live fully independently. Homeless women with psychosocial disability are grouped into 3-4 people & they share a home rented in rural & urban communities. .

Home again offers over 200 individuals with mental illness, across a cross-section of low to high disability levels; sustainable long-stay care needs support to live in homes as members of families formed in simple rural & urban neighborhoods with residential daily assistance & case management.

Effect of home again was researched in two phases as a trial comparing those who moved into housing with comparable sample that remained in hospital based care. Home Again presents significant gains with reduced disability, increased community integration & lesser stigma in neighborhoods where these homes are rented.

Home again presents substantive social inclusion & disability related gains for people with mental illness at a fraction of what it costs for lifelong institutional stay INR7515 per person per month inclusive of all direct & indirect costs compared to INR20000-inr35000 for institutional mental health care.

  • 500 will pay for a month’s worth of medicine
  • 750 will pay for all emergency administrative costs involved
  • 1350wil provide one month’s housing for one client
  • 1500 will cover monthly costs involved in providing meals for one client
  • 3000 will provide on-going professional medical medical care & support
